As many of our valued community will know, I participated in the Vinnies CEO Sleepout on Thursday 20 July to raise vital funds for the Vinnies Food Van, a service which provided nearly 10,000 meals to homeless people in the Illawarra in the last year.
2024 marked my 10th year taking part in the CEO Sleepout and I can tell you, it doesn’t get any easier. The night is difficult an gives all of us who participate a real understanding of how hard life is when you have no options, and you do this every night.
The homelessness statistics for our region are sobering and the requests for support to Vinnies has risen by 41% in the past 12 months. Homelessness can impact anyone at any time and it is a serious community issue. Homelessness is not only being on the street; it’s sleeping in your car, couch surfing, room sharing, living in bus and camp shelters.
We had two individuals on the night share their story and both had spent the past two years living in their cars. This is an unimaginable reality for many of us but one we must never assume we are immune to.
I want to say a HUGE thank you to every person who donated to this important cause through me in 2024. This year, we raised $41,304 which is the most we have raised in one year, a phenomenal result when we acknowledge every donation was made against a backdrop of economic uncertainty and financial hardship for many people.
Over the last decade, we collectively have raised $296,212. Our reward for achieving this result together is knowing the Vinnies Food Van continues, and we get to do it again next year.
Thank you once again from the bottom of my heart. Together, we are Community Strong. 💙
