Wests Illawarra celebrates 70 years of being community strong
On 28 January 2026, Wests Illawarra proudly marks 70 years at the heart of the Illawarra community – celebrating seven decades of connection, contribution and shared moments.
Since opening its doors in 1956, Wests Illawarra has grown alongside the community it serves, building enduring relationships with local sporting clubs, social groups, charities and community organisations. Across generations, the club has been a place to gather, celebrate milestones, support local causes and strengthen community ties.
Chairperson Trevor Castle said the 70 year milestone is a moment to reflect on the club’s journey while looking ahead with confidence.
“As we celebrate 70 years of Wests Illawarra, we honour the past, recognise the present, and look confidently to the future. I am proud of what has been achieved, grateful to all who have contributed, and confident that Wests Illawarra will continue to be a club our community can rely on for generations to come,” Mr Castle said.
Throughout its history, Wests Illawarra has remained committed to giving back – supporting grassroots sport, community initiatives, charitable organisations and social programs that make a real difference across the region. These long-standing partnerships reflect the club’s belief that a strong community is built through connection, care and shared purpose.
Chief Executive Officer Daniel Munk said the anniversary is a testament to the people who have shaped the club over the decades.
“Reaching 70 years is an incredible milestone for our club. It’s a testament to the loyalty of our members, the dedication of our staff, and the strength of the community that has supported us every step of the way,” Mr Munk said.
“As we celebrate this anniversary, we’re not just looking back at how far we’ve come, we’re reaffirming our commitment to continue supporting our community and creating a welcoming place for everyone.”
Wests Illawarra will acknowledge the milestone throughout 2026, reflecting on key moments from each decade and celebrating the people and partnerships that have helped shape the club into what it is today.
